It has taken over two years.  It has been a long time coming, indeed...

On February 15, 2008, I had been a member of Active Rain for less than a year.  In the previous year, I had written exactly four posts.  I didn't know anything about blogging or social media...

But for some reason (perhaps desperation?), I made a commitment that day that I would start participating more on Active Rain...

As luck would have it, Jason Crouch wrote a post that same day titled, "How to generate and track backlinks for your Active Rain profile - A few basic SEO tips".

It answered a basic question for me.  Why blog?

The answer?  To dominate the search enginesGoogleYahoo.  Search engine optimization (SEO)...

But for two years I floundered between page 3 and page 6 of Google for two major search terms, "Naperville Realtor" and "Naperville Real Estate".

Oh, I was writing a lot of posts (I have written almost 600).  But I wasn't dominating the search engines for the key "search terms" like I had hoped...

But then I wrote a couple local real estate market reports in January.  Then I wrote some more...

Then I made a goal.  A month of local real estate market reports focusing on subdivisions in and around Naperville, Illinois.

I wrote 33 local market reports, hoping to accomplish two things:

  1. Generate more leads
  2. Improve my ranking for real estate related search terms on Google

Those reports have already gnerated more leads then I had hoped...

And this week, I have achieved my second goal...

I have climbed my way to the first page on Google for my primary search terms...

Check it out.  Google "Naperville Realtor" or "Naperville Real Estate".

There I am.  On Google's first page.  Pretty cool...

Will I stay atop the Google "leaderboard"?  And how much business will all this Google juice really generate?

I don't know, but I will not get complacent.

I have just finished my first quarter 2010 market reports for those same 33 neighborhoods.  It was a lot of work, but I am achieving my goals through blogging...

I don't intend to stop.

Hi Ken, that is awesome. I have been blogging my heart out and not knowing if it is doing any good. It is good to hear it worked for you! Tiffany

Ken, thanks for the post.  Did you post to anything special within Active Rain (such as "Localism" which I know little about)?  Or was it simply a matter of focusing on local communities which caught the search botts (or whatever) from Google?  My goal this year is to become totally "electronically" connected.  I've already achieved some success but am very eager to get my organic placement on page on of Google.

It is working.  I think the market reports work great!

Ken, Great. Congratulations! I'm inspired and hot on the trail. I've been blogging less than 2 months and have moved up to the #22 spot of 910 A.R. agents in Arkansas and I'm convinced of the benefit on S.E.O. results.~Chas.

Hi John, Charles and Kris.  Thanks for reading.

I have certainly posted all of my neighborhood reports on Localism.  I have two listings and a buyer contract from those January reports...

For two years, I mostly wrote personal/funny/story/looking for comment type posts.  Not much of any real estate content...

The market reports have changed that, and my Google ranking took off.

Thanks again,

Hi Cindy and Marchel.  Thanks for reading.

It sure has been a long strange journey the last two years...

I have seen so many benefits from the blogging.  Not just leads and SEO, either.  I have learned so much...

Hi Ken,

Just wanted to hop over to your blog to tell you thanks for taking the time to post this.  As you know, I changed my sig line as soon as I read it.  I've started doing blogs about some of the local neighborhoods, but haven't done market reports for them yet.  Another great tip!!  Happy blogging and congrats again!

Congrats! Sounds like I better get moving on the market reports.  I've been blogging for just over 6 months and am slowly seeing my posts rise up the Google pages.  Nothing like a little success story for motivation.

Good one.Yes Ken it always helps writing blogs with key words in mind.

The other way to get the top ranking on the first page is buy it ( Key words) from google. But the question is, if you can do it your self with quality stuff ( your way), why go to google.

they are so important and to have them written down and visualize is equally important. I believe you have to have a way to measure your progress.
