Ken's Naperville Real Estate Blog : Are you a wallflower? Or do you like to dance?

Are you a wallflower? Or do you like to dance?

I taught my first class on social media last week at our office in Naperville.

One of the first questions I asked the class was "How many of you already have a facebook profile?"

                                              facebook

About 90% of the hands popped up...

My next questions was "When was the last time you actually posted something on facebook?"

All I got were blank stares...

Are you a wallflower?  Or do you like to dance?

The world is filled with all types of people.  The leaders.  The followers.  The bold.  The shy.  The wallflowers and the dancers...

But if you want to get the most out of of social media, you are going to have to get off the sidelines and get out on the dance floor.

I don't care what site you are using.  Active Rain, Twitter, facebook, Trulia...

They all work, but you need to work them to get the full benefit.  Part of social media is, after all, being social.  A big part.

Write a post.  Make a comment.  Share a photo.  Tell a joke.

Break out your dancing shoes.  Don't be shy.

You might be surprised how much fun you can have.

Ken

Hi Ken ~ I've really ignored FB until I went to Raincamp and finally got the nudge to get on there - the numbers are too big to ignore. It cracks me up how people's FB style correlates with their personality. The social bees are very active, others who just aren't into parties, etc. haven't uploaded a photo or left a post. And what does it say that many of my very favorite people from my past aren't even on it?!

Hi Liz.  Thanks so much for commenting.

It probably says that FB still has room to grow.  It is a great place to post your posts...

Also an incredible opportunity to stay in front of lots of people...

Thanks again,

Ken

There is agood point being made here about participation.  So many start with good intentions and then crash and burn.  You positive reminder is just what is needed in this market.

Ken - I need to get a little more plugged in to social media and participate more with FB status updates.

Hi Sarasota, John, and Robert. Thanks so much for reading. The class went well. I thought I did well, despite being nervous. I am doing a follow up on Friday! Thanks again, Ken

Hi Ken!
I don't know of another venue where the saying "You get what you give" is better reflected! If you want people to have a conversation with you, it is a two-way street...and you have to start crossing the road first if you want someone to join you!

Ken, So happy your class went well. The social comments made on FB reveal a lot about a person. I know I have formed opinions about whether I would want to work with someone based on what they have commented.

Hi Deanne and Paula.  Thanks for reading.

Paula, very well said.

Deanne, you do get to know people via facebook.  It does work!

Thanks again,

Ken

Ken,

Waiting for you to offer a class to all us midwest Active Rainers. :)

For now though, thank you for all the advice you share with all of Active Rain here online.

Ken:  Ya know... if I just wasn't so darn shy and backward... I think I WOULD write a comment or two, and even write a post or three that just might be a tad controversial.  Naw, wait... I dould never do that.  Nah... I wouldn't want to make waves.  <she said, putting her index finger beneath her chin, and looking like Shirley Temple... >

You get what you give is definately a true statement.  Isn't that clip at Adam's Bar Mitvah?    I love that episode

Hi Karen, Judy, and Karen. Thanks for stopping by... Judy, you are the first to mention the Seinfeld. I was thinking no one could see it... Karen, funny you mention. I have been having a class the last three weeks at my office. Fairly tepid attendence... Considering future. Karen, I know you like to dance!
