Ken's Naperville Real Estate Blog : I'll mow your lawn for $25...

I'll mow your lawn for $25...

I mowed lawns for money when I was a kid.  The money was good.  I was running my own business.  There were actually many similarities to my business today as a real estate agent.

After all these years, I still like mowing lawns.  Good honest work.  Outside.  Exercise.  Sun.  Productive.

Mowing the lawn is good for the soul.

Mowing the lawn in Naperville
-mowing my backyard in Brookdale, Naperville...

I live in a subdivision in Naperville named Brookdale.  Nice subdivision.  Middle priced by Naperville standards...

As pleasant as Brookdale is, it is not immune to the blight of bank owned properties.

Long grass.  Run down condition.  For Sale Signs....

There is a foreclosure a few doors down from where I live.  The home is for sale.  Slightly overpriced at $274,900, the home would be a nice deal in the $240K range.  Recently rehabbed.  Nice sized rooms.  And a nice neighborhood.

I can see the yard from my front windows.  It stands out from the rest.  Most homes in Brookdale, Naperville are very well kept, but this home is overgrown.  Bad for business...

Certainly bad for my neighborhood.

As a concerned neighbor and a REALTOR, I contacted the agent and offerred to mow the lawn for $25.  My mower.  My gas.

She responded:

Thank you, they have someone already.

Good for you! Maybe she is responsible for the mowing and only wants to pay every other week?

We've had so much rain the lawns -- and weeds -- are going to explode when it gets and stays hot.

Really? And when will that somebody be over to cut the grass right? I'd probably do it for free to just to have the place look nice.

It can be such a problem.

I've got a home close to me that's a foreclosure. I have to say, it never looked THAT good when it was OWNER occupied...go figure!

Hope you get new neighbors soon!

How ironic.

Unfortunately, I have two short sales where I have to have the lawn mowed myself. :(

Funny thing is I closed on a house earlier this week. the yard needed mowed and i let the buyers know I would have my lawn service go mow and clean up the yard. I drove by the house the other day and the yard looked great, however my lawn guy calls me last night and says the yard has already been mowed. The buyers say they did not have it mowed. It's a mystery to me.

I actually mow the lawn in my dog yard weekly - they love it and I enjoy the exercise.  I L♥VE the TruGreen commercials with the boy mowing lawns and counting his cash at the workbench in the garage....babysitting and mowing lawns have always been teenage work options!

Hi Wallace, Don, JP, Tom, and Leslie.  Thanks so much for stopping by...

I don't blame the agent.  I had a short sale listing a couple years ago that had long grass (not this long!).  I always had to stay on the owner to keep it cut, but it was hard...

I do believe the bank that owns this house would be wise to make it look a bit better.  Kids might start getting lost in the weeds!

Thanks again,

Ken

Hi Ken,

I think most REO listings get the grass cut every other week. The one I have in Wheaton does that. In spring our grass grows really fast and really needs to be done weekly. From your pictures it looks like they do it monthly, it's already gone to seed. Very sad. I think I must just cut the front regardless!

Hi Judy and Corinne.  Thanks for stopping in.

The funny thing is they came by and mowed it the day after I wrote this post.  A huge thunderstorm was bearing down, and they came in with a powerful mower and went to work.

Glad to see it done!
